When Should You Replace Your Drip Irrigation System? Upgrade or Replace

The Hunter PGP Ultra 6" Rotor is one of the most trusted names in professional lawn irrigation — and for good reason. Built on over three decades of field-proven engineering, this heavy-duty pop-up rotor delivers a powerful, consistent stream of water across large turf areas, covering a radius of 17 to 46 feet and an adjustable arc from 50° to a full 360°. Whether you're irrigating a wide-open backyard, a commercial landscape, a sports field, or a large residential lawn, the PGP Ultra has the range, durability, and flexibility to do it right.
What sets the PGP Ultra apart is its non-strippable drive and automatic arc return — two innovations that make installation and service far less frustrating. You can manually rotate the turret during setup without fear of damaging the gear mechanism, and it will always return to its programmed arc automatically. The QuickCheck™ arc mechanism allows for fast, tool-free arc verification in the field, while flat-top nozzles snap in and out quickly for easy radius adjustment on the job. The unit ships with an impressive 34 nozzle options (12 included — 8 standard, 4 low-angle) so you can fine-tune precipitation rate, radius, and trajectory for virtually any site condition. It connects via a 3/4" threaded inlet, making it compatible with standard lateral pipe in most residential and commercial irrigation systems.
If you're converting an older sprinkler system to drip or need to pair this rotor with a modern controller, DripWorks carries a full range of compatible irrigation timers and valves. Need a smaller rotor for tighter spaces? Consider the Hunter PGP-ADJ 4" Pop-Up Rotor or the more affordable Hunter PGJ 6" Rotor for lower-flow applications.

What is the difference between the PGP Ultra and the PGJ?
The PGP Ultra is Hunter's premium, heavy-duty rotor for large residential and commercial applications. It features a larger body, a 3/4" inlet, a wider radius (up to 46'), a higher flow rate (up to 14.8 GPM), and the full automatic arc return system. The PGJ is a lighter-duty rotor with a 1/2" inlet, suited for smaller residential zones with a radius of 15'–34' and lower flow requirements (0.42–4.3 GPM).
What is the "non-strippable drive" and why does it matter?
Older rotor designs could be damaged if the turret was manually rotated during installation or maintenance — the internal gears would strip. The PGP Ultra's non-strippable drive eliminates this risk entirely. You can rotate the turret freely by hand without causing any mechanical damage, making setup and adjustment much easier and worry-free.
How does the automatic arc return work?
Once you set the arc, the PGP Ultra will always return the turret to the programmed left-stop, even if it's manually moved out of position during maintenance or mowing. This saves time on service calls and ensures consistent, uniform coverage season after season. The QuickCheck™ arc mechanism also lets you visually verify the arc setting at a glance in the field without running the system.
Which nozzle should I use?
Nozzle selection depends on your desired radius and precipitation rate. Standard nozzles cover a wide range of flows and radii for typical lawn applications. Low-angle nozzles are ideal for windy environments or areas under tree canopies where a lower trajectory is needed. Hunter's spec sheet (available in the Downloads section) includes a full precipitation rate table for all 34 nozzles.
Is this compatible with a smart irrigation controller?
Yes. The PGP Ultra is a standard 3/4" rotor that works with any irrigation controller that operates solenoid valves. It is fully compatible with smart controllers from Hunter, Rachio, Orbit B-Hyve, and others. DripWorks carries a full range of compatible timers and controllers.
What is the minimum pressure needed to operate the PGP Ultra?
The rotor can operate as low as 20 PSI, but optimal performance is achieved between 25 and 70 PSI. At pressures below 25 PSI, rotation may be inconsistent and radius will be reduced. If your water pressure exceeds 70 PSI, we recommend using a pressure regulator to keep the system within the recommended range.
Can I use this rotor for a part-circle application (not full 360°)?
Absolutely. The adjustable arc is one of the PGP Ultra's most useful features. You can set it anywhere from 50° (a narrow wedge) to a full 360° circle, making it ideal for corners, edges, and irregular landscape shapes.
Is there a version with a check valve to prevent low-head drainage?
If low-head drainage is a concern in your system (water draining out of the lowest rotors after the valve shuts off), consider the Hunter I-20 Rotor, which includes a built-in check valve and pressure-regulated body.
