Description

The World's Best-Selling Rotor. Proven Since 1981.

The Hunter PGP-ADJ 4" Pop-Up Rotor is the original gear-drive rotor that put Hunter Industries on the map — and it has been the number-one-selling rotor in the world ever since. Built for residential and light commercial lawns, this 4" pop-up delivers reliable, even water distribution across a generous radius of 22 to 52 feet with a fully adjustable arc from 40° to a full 360°. Whether you're watering a front lawn, a side yard, or a long rectangular turf area, the PGP-ADJ gives you the flexibility to match coverage to the exact shape of your landscape and keep water where it belongs.

What makes the PGP-ADJ the professional's go-to choice is its combination of simplicity, durability, and nozzle versatility. The water-lubricated gear drive is exceptionally long-lived, and the rotor ships with a full nozzle tree of 8 interchangeable nozzles — available in standard red and standard blue options — covering a wide range of flow rates and radii. Low-angle gray nozzles are also available separately for windy environments or low-clearance plantings. Arc adjustment is performed from the top of the head using a standard Hunter rotor tool (a complimentary Hunter Sprinkler Key is included with every qualifying order). The 3/4" female pipe thread (FPT) inlet makes it compatible with standard residential irrigation laterals and swing joints throughout the system.

The PGP-ADJ is the right choice when you need a proven, cost-effective rotor for standard residential zones. If your application demands the added durability of a non-strippable drive, automatic arc return, and expanded nozzle options, consider upgrading to the Hunter PGP Ultra. For smaller zones with lower flow needs, the Hunter PGJ Rotor with its 1/2" inlet is an excellent fit. DripWorks also carries a full range of irrigation timers and controllers to automate your watering schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between the PGP-ADJ and the PGP Ultra?
The PGP-ADJ is Hunter's original, field-proven residential rotor — reliable, affordable, and simple to install. The PGP Ultra is an upgraded version that adds a non-strippable drive (turret can be manually rotated without damage), automatic arc return (turret always returns to its programmed arc), a headed and slotted set screw, and 34 total nozzle options. For most standard residential zones, the PGP-ADJ is an excellent value. If you need those added features — especially for high-traffic or commercial installations — the PGP Ultra is the better investment.

What is the difference between the PGP-ADJ and the PGJ?
The PGP-ADJ uses a 3/4" inlet and is designed for larger residential zones, with a radius of 22'–52' and an operating pressure of 25–65 PSI. The Hunter PGJ uses a 1/2" inlet and is suited for smaller zones with a shorter radius (15'–34') and an operating pressure of 60–100 PSI. The PGJ is ideal when you want the efficiency of a gear-drive rotor in a compact, spray-sized package — and it can even be paired in the same zone as larger rotors thanks to its matched precipitation rate design.

Which nozzle color should I choose — red or blue?
Both standard red and standard blue nozzle trees cover a radius range of roughly 22'–52' depending on pressure. The key difference is flow: blue nozzles run at somewhat higher flows and are typically used for longer spacings and higher-volume zones. Red nozzles provide a broader range of output options, including smaller low-flow nozzles for tighter spacings. Check Hunter's nozzle performance data (available in the Downloads section) to match the nozzle number to your desired radius and system flow.

Are low-angle nozzles available for the PGP-ADJ?
Yes. Gray low-angle nozzles are available separately and fit the same body. Low-angle nozzles reduce the trajectory of the water stream, making them ideal for windy sites, areas under tree canopies, or applications where a lower arc helps with uniformity. Keep in mind that low-angle nozzles have a shorter radius than their standard counterparts, so adjust your head spacing accordingly.

What pressure range does the PGP-ADJ require?
The rotor is designed to operate between 25 and 65 PSI. For best performance and most uniform precipitation, operate within this range. If your supply pressure is higher than 65 PSI, we recommend installing a pressure regulator upstream to protect the rotor and maintain consistent coverage.

Can I mix PGP-ADJ rotors and PGJ rotors on the same zone?
In general, it is not recommended to mix rotors and spray heads on the same zone due to differences in precipitation rate and cycle time. However, the PGP-ADJ and PGJ can sometimes be matched in the same zone if you carefully select nozzles that produce similar precipitation rates. Consult Hunter's nozzle performance charts to verify compatibility before designing mixed zones.

Is there a version with a built-in check valve?
The standard PGP-ADJ does not include a check valve. If low-head drainage is a concern — where water drains out of the lowest rotors after the valve closes — consider the PGP Ultra, which is available in a check valve version, or the Hunter I-20 Rotor with check valve for premium commercial applications.

Is this compatible with smart irrigation controllers?
Yes. The PGP-ADJ is a standard 3/4" gear-drive rotor and is compatible with any irrigation controller that operates solenoid valves, including smart controllers from Hunter, Rachio, Orbit B-Hyve, and others. DripWorks carries a full range of compatible timers and controllers.

✔ Compatibility Check

Before you install, verify the following:

  • Inlet Size: This rotor uses a 3/4" FPT (Female Pipe Thread) inlet. Make sure your lateral pipe or swing joint is sized to match. If your laterals are 1/2", use the Hunter PGJ with 1/2" inlet instead.
  • Water Pressure: Designed for 25–65 PSI. If your static pressure exceeds 65 PSI, install a pressure regulator to protect performance and uniformity.
  • Coverage Area: Radius ranges from 22'–52' depending on nozzle selection. For proper head-to-head coverage, space rotors at or below the maximum radius of the selected nozzle.
  • Pop-Up Height: The 4" pop-up height is ideal for maintained lawns with short turf. For tall grass or ground covers, consider a 6" pop-up model such as the PGP Ultra 6".
  • Slopes / Low Areas: If your zone has significant grade changes, low-head drainage may occur. Consider adding a check valve body or upgrading to the Hunter I-20 with check valve.

Complete Your Irrigation System

Pair your PGP-ADJ rotors with these essential components for a fully functional, efficient system:

  • Irrigation Timers & Controllers: Automate your watering schedule with battery-operated or AC-powered controllers compatible with standard solenoid valves.
  • Irrigation Valves: Zone control valves to operate each rotor circuit independently from your controller.
  • Pressure Regulators: Protect your rotors and maximize coverage uniformity if your supply pressure exceeds 65 PSI.
  • Funny Pipe & Swing Joints: Flexible swing joints allow rotors to flex under foot traffic or mowers without breaking the lateral pipe connection.
  • Sprinkler Tools: Arc adjustment tools, rotor pullers, and other specialty tools for professional installation and maintenance.
