Description

Protect Your Sprinklers — and Your Supply Line — with the Right Swing Joint.

Installing a sprinkler head directly into a rigid PVC supply line is one of the most common and costly mistakes in underground irrigation. When a rotor or spray head gets clipped by a mower, stepped on, or shifted by settling soil, the stress transmits straight to the pipe — and you end up with a cracked lateral line, a flooded lawn, and an expensive dig-up repair. The Hunter SJ Swing Joint eliminates that risk entirely.

The Hunter SJ is a preassembled, flexible swing joint designed to connect your sprinkler head to the supply line with shock-absorbing articulation. Its four swivel elbows allow the assembly to flex in virtually any direction, absorbing impact and accommodating grade changes without stressing the lateral pipe. Swivel ells on both ends mean the sprinkler can be repositioned easily — dialed in to the perfect height, angle, and orientation — without wrenches, without adapters, and without fighting rigid pipe. Available at DripWorks in 1/2" × 12" and 3/4" × 12" sizes to match the most common residential and commercial sprinkler inlets.

Whether you're installing new rotors, retrofitting spray bodies, or raising heads that have been buried under years of thatch buildup, the Hunter SJ is the professional-grade accessory that makes every sprinkler installation faster, more precise, and far more durable. It's a small part that makes a big difference — and it's one that professional irrigation contractors rely on every single day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why can't I just screw a sprinkler directly into my PVC supply line?
Rigid PVC is strong under steady pressure but brittle under lateral impact and point stress. When a sprinkler head is clipped by a mower blade, stepped on, or shifted by soil movement, the force is transmitted directly to the lateral pipe — which can crack or break. A swing joint's flexible, multi-elbow design absorbs and redirects that shock, protecting the supply line and making the repair a simple swap of the swing joint rather than a pipe dig-up.

What does "four swivel elbows" mean, and why does it matter?
The Hunter SJ features four articulating elbow joints — two at each end — that can rotate and flex independently of one another. This means the assembly can adapt to virtually any pipe-to-sprinkler geometry without kinking or leaking. You can adjust the sprinkler to the correct grade, angle, and position simply by repositioning the elbows, no special tools required. The swivel ells on both the inlet and outlet ends give you maximum configuration flexibility on any installation.

Which size do I need — 1/2" or 3/4"?
Match the swing joint size to your sprinkler's inlet thread size. Most Hunter and Rain Bird spray bodies use a 1/2" NPT inlet — use the SJ-512. Hunter PGP Ultra and other large-body rotors use a 3/4" NPT inlet — use the SJ-712. Always check your sprinkler's spec sheet if you're unsure. DripWorks carries both sizes on this listing.

Do I need any special tools to install a swing joint?
No special tools are required. The SJ comes fully preassembled. You connect the bottom of the swing joint to your supply line (typically via a PVC female combo tee) and thread the top into your sprinkler head's inlet. The rotating MPT connections allow you to fine-tune height and angle by hand. A standard pair of channel-lock pliers is sufficient for tightening the threaded connections.

What is the maximum pressure rating for the Hunter SJ?
The Hunter SJ swing joint is pressure-rated to 150 PSI, well above the typical operating pressure of any residential or commercial sprinkler system. It is safe for use in high-pressure systems and is not the limiting factor in system pressure design.

Can I use this to raise sprinklers that have sunk below grade?
Yes. This is one of the most practical uses for a 12" swing joint. If sprinklers have sunk due to soil settling or thatch buildup, the swing joint gives you the flexibility to extend the connection point and bring the head back up to proper grade — without cutting and re-plumbing the supply line.

What sprinklers at DripWorks are compatible with these swing joints?
The 1/2" SJ-512 is compatible with most Hunter and Rain Bird spray bodies available at DripWorks, including standard pop-up spray bodies. The 3/4" SJ-712 is the correct choice for large-body rotors such as the Hunter PGP Ultra 6" Rotor and the Hunter PGJ 6" Rotor.

✔ Compatibility Check

Before you install, verify the following:

  • Inlet Size: The 1/2" SJ-512 fits spray bodies and small rotors with a 1/2" NPT inlet. The 3/4" SJ-712 fits larger rotors with a 3/4" NPT inlet. Always match the swing joint size to your sprinkler's inlet thread.
  • Supply Line Connection: Use a PVC Female Combo Tee to connect the swing joint to your PVC lateral pipe. The threaded MPT bottom of the swing joint threads directly into the female tee outlet.
  • Pressure: The SJ is rated to 150 PSI — suitable for all standard residential and commercial systems. If your system runs above 70 PSI, consider adding a pressure regulator to protect your sprinkler heads.
  • Grade & Slope: The four-elbow swivel design handles sloped terrain and allows the sprinkler to be set level even when the supply line runs at an angle.

Complete Your Irrigation System

Pair your Hunter SJ Swing Joints with everything else you need for a professional underground sprinkler installation:

  • Rotors: Large-area gear-drive sprinklers, including the Hunter PGP Ultra and PGJ, that connect via a 3/4" swing joint.
  • Spray Bodies: Pop-up spray heads for smaller zones — most use a 1/2" inlet and pair with the SJ-512.
  • Funny Pipe, Adapters & Swing Joints: Browse the full category for all flexible connection options, including funny pipe and barbed adapters.
  • Irrigation Timers & Controllers: Automate your sprinkler zones with battery or AC-powered controllers compatible with standard solenoid valves.
  • Irrigation Valves: Zone control valves to operate each sprinkler circuit independently.
  • Pressure Regulators: Protect sprinkler heads and maximize distribution uniformity when supply pressure runs high.
  • Sprinkler Tools: Arc adjustment keys, rotor pullers, and other specialty tools that make installation and maintenance faster.
