Top 5 Sprinkler Upgrades for Better Efficiency

Toro Aqua-Traxx® Azul™ 15 Mil Drip Tape represents the latest generation of heavy-duty, low-cost precision watering. Designed specifically for demanding agricultural row crops, market farms, and raised beds, this tape features an entirely redesigned emitter. By utilizing patented multi-stage filters that protect the internal labyrinth from various sizes of debris, Azul™ maximizes clog resistance and field performance. In fact, select high-flow models boast an industry-first filtration requirement of just 80 mesh—the lowest for any drip tape on the market!
This 15 mil thickness is the heavy-duty standard for multi-season use. It is highly resistant to insect damage and field abrasion, typically lasting up to 7 years when buried or mulched, and 2 to 5 years when laid directly on the surface. Operating flawlessly on low-pressure systems between 4 and 15 PSI, Aqua-Traxx Azul delivers a highly uniform flow with a Coefficient of Variation (Cv) of less than 3%. For leak-free performance, always pair this 5/8" tape directly with standard 5/8" drip tape fittings.

Install your Toro Aqua-Traxx Drip Tape quickly and correctly.
Step 1: Regulate Your Pressure
Aqua-Traxx Azul operates strictly between 4 and 15 PSI. Ensure your head assembly includes a low-flow pressure regulator (typically 10 PSI or 12 PSI) and a mesh filter (80 to 120 mesh depending on the tape's flow rate).
Step 2: Roll Out (Blue Stripe Up)
Unroll the tape down your crop row. Crucial: Always install the tape with the double blue stripes facing UP towards the sky. This ensures the internal emitters are positioned correctly to prevent sediment from settling over the laser-slit outlets.
Step 3: Connect to Mainline
Punch a hole in your poly mainline or Oval Hose header. Insert a standard 5/8" tape takeoff fitting. Slide the drip tape over the barb and twist the locking nut over the tape to secure it.
Step 4: Flush and Cap
Before capping the system, turn the water on to flush any dirt out of the open rows. Once the water runs clear, terminate the end of each row by folding it over and slipping on a standard tape end closure.
Why does the blue stripe need to face up?
Installing the tape with the double blue stripes facing upward ensures that the precision-slit emitters are positioned correctly.
If installed upside down, fine sediment left in the water when the system shuts off will settle directly over the emitters due to gravity, leading to clogs. Facing it up utilizes the Azul's internal labyrinth to its full potential.
Do I need to use a pressure regulator?
Yes, an irrigation pressure regulator is absolutely mandatory. This 15 mil tape is designed to operate strictly between 4 and 15 PSI.
Standard home and farm water pressure is much higher (40-60+ PSI), which will immediately rupture and blow out the thin-walled tape. We recommend a 10 PSI or 12 PSI regulator.
What is the difference between Low Flow and High Flow?
Low flow tape emits water slower (e.g., 20 GPH per 100 feet), which allows you to run much longer rows (up to 900 ft) without losing pressure. High flow tape outputs water faster (e.g., 40 GPH per 100 feet), which waters the crop quicker but shortens the maximum row length (e.g., 460 ft).
High flow models feature Toro's industry-first 80-mesh filtration requirement, while low flow requires standard 120-mesh.
How should I prepare my drip tape for spring planting?
Because 15 mil is heavy-duty tape, it can often be reused for multiple seasons. Before running water to your new crops, open the end closures and thoroughly flush the lines.
Check for any rodent or insect damage from the winter. Small holes can easily be patched using a 5/8" tape coupler before you pressurize the system for the spring season.
