Description

Precision Half-Circle Coverage for Edges, Borders & Tight Spaces.

The Rain Bird 8H MPR Nozzle is a fixed-pattern spray nozzle engineered to deliver a precise 8-foot radius half-circle (180°) pattern — making it the go-to choice for lawn edges, planting beds, strips along walkways, fences, and other areas where a full-circle pattern would waste water on hardscape. As part of Rain Bird's industry-standard Matched Precipitation Rate (MPR) series, it is trusted by more contractors than all other irrigation brands combined.

What makes MPR nozzles stand out is their ability to deliver uniform precipitation rates across different arc sizes and radii. This means you can mix 8H half-circle nozzles, quarter-circle nozzles, and full-circle nozzles on the same zone without over- or under-watering any one area — a critical advantage for system design flexibility. The 8H operates at a pressure range of 15 to 30 PSI, with an optimum performance pressure of 30 PSI. Rain Bird recommends pairing it with their 1800 PRS pressure-regulated spray bodies in higher-pressure situations to maintain peak nozzle performance.

The 8H ships with a blue fine-mesh filter screen (0.02" x 0.02") that maintains precise radius adjustment and prevents clogging. A stainless steel adjustment screw allows fine-tuning of flow and radius in the field. The nozzle is color-coded on top for quick identification of arc and radius without running the system, and it fits all Rain Bird spray bodies and shrub adapters. If you need more coverage reach, consider the Rain Bird 10H (10 ft. half-circle) or the Rain Bird 15H (15 ft. half-circle). For full-circle applications at the same radius, see the Rain Bird 8F (8 ft. full-circle).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does "MPR" mean, and why does it matter?
MPR stands for Matched Precipitation Rate. It means that Rain Bird has engineered this nozzle series so that all arcs and radii in the same series deliver the same precipitation rate (inches per hour). You can mix a half-circle 8H, a quarter-circle 8Q, and a full-circle 8F on the same zone without over-watering corners or under-watering the middle of a lawn. This simplifies system design and eliminates uneven turf conditions.

What spray body does the 8H nozzle fit?
The 8H fits all Rain Bird spray bodies and shrub adapters with a standard female-threaded nozzle seat. This includes Rain Bird's 1800 Series pop-up spray heads. For high-pressure systems (above 30 PSI), Rain Bird recommends using 1800 PRS (pressure-regulated) spray bodies to maintain optimal nozzle performance. Browse compatible spray bodies at DripWorks.

What is the ideal water pressure for this nozzle?
The 8H operates between 15 and 30 PSI, with the optimum performance pressure at 30 PSI. At lower pressures, the radius will shorten and distribution uniformity may decrease. At pressures above 30 PSI, a pressure-regulated spray body is recommended. If your system pressure runs high, consider adding a pressure regulator upstream.

Can I mix the 8H with other MPR nozzles on the same zone?
Yes — that is the primary advantage of the MPR system. You can mix the 8H with other nozzles in the 8-Series (such as the 8F full-circle or 8Q quarter-circle) and they will all apply water at the same precipitation rate. You can also mix different series (5, 8, 10, 12, 15) as long as all nozzles are from the MPR series and are matched in precipitation rate for your zone layout. Check the performance chart (available in the Downloads section below) for specific precipitation rate data.

What is the filter screen included with the nozzle?
Each 8H ships with a blue fine-mesh filter screen (0.02" x 0.02") that clips in at the nozzle base. This screen catches debris that can clog the nozzle orifice and affect radius adjustment. It is recommended to inspect and clean this screen periodically, especially in systems without an upstream filter. For added protection, consider adding a line filter to your system.

What if I need a larger or smaller radius?
Rain Bird's MPR series covers radii from 5 to 15 feet in the same half-circle pattern. At DripWorks you'll find the 10H (10 ft.) and 15H (15 ft.) for larger areas. For smaller areas, the stainless steel adjustment screw on this nozzle allows you to reduce the radius below 8 ft. if needed.

How does the Top Color-Coding help during installation?
Rain Bird MPR nozzles are color-coded on the top of the nozzle cap to indicate the arc and radius. This lets installers and technicians visually verify that the correct nozzle is installed in each head without running the system — saving time during both initial installation and routine maintenance inspections.

Can I automate a system using these nozzles with a timer?
Absolutely. These nozzles work with any standard irrigation system controlled by solenoid valves and a timer or smart controller. DripWorks carries a full range of irrigation timers and controllers compatible with fixed-spray sprinkler systems.

✔ Compatibility Check

Before you install, verify the following:

  • Spray Body Compatibility: The 8H fits all Rain Bird spray heads and shrub adapters with a standard female-threaded nozzle seat. It is not designed for use with rotor bodies.
  • Water Pressure: This nozzle operates between 15–30 PSI. If your system runs above 30 PSI, use a pressure-regulated (PRS) spray body or add an upstream pressure regulator.
  • Pattern Selection: The 8H covers a half-circle (180°) at 8 ft. radius. For full-circle needs at the same radius, use the 8F. For larger coverage, step up to the 10H or 15H.
  • Zone Mixing: When mixing nozzles on the same zone, always use nozzles from the same MPR series to maintain uniform precipitation rates across all heads.
  • Filter Screen: The included blue fine-mesh screen must be installed at the nozzle base. Inspect and clean it regularly, particularly in areas with sediment or mineral buildup.

Complete Your Sprinkler System

Pair the Rain Bird 8H nozzle with these essential components for a fully functional, efficient sprinkler system:

  • Spray Bodies: Pop-up spray heads in 2", 3", 4", and 6" heights to pair with this nozzle. Use pressure-regulated (PRS) bodies if your supply pressure exceeds 30 PSI.
  • Other Rain Bird MPR Spray Nozzles: Mix and match half-circle, quarter-circle, and full-circle MPR nozzles across multiple radii for complete, even coverage across your entire zone.
  • Irrigation Timers & Controllers: Automate your watering schedule with battery-operated or AC-powered controllers compatible with standard solenoid valves.
  • Irrigation Valves: Zone control valves to operate each sprinkler circuit independently from your controller.
  • Pressure Regulators: Protect your nozzles and maximize uniformity if your supply pressure is above 30 PSI.
  • Inline Filters: Keep sediment and debris out of your nozzle screens and away from the adjustment screw for long-term performance.
  • Funny Pipe & Swing Joints: Flexible connections that protect your lateral pipe from damage caused by foot traffic or lawnmower strikes near spray heads.
