Description

No Glue, No Clamps, No Frustration. The Smarter Swing Pipe.

The Hydro-Rain BLP-050-CL-1X 1/2" Blu-Lock Swing Pipe is the fastest and cleanest way to connect sprinkler heads to your irrigation lateral lines. Sold in a convenient 100-foot coil, this flexible pipe eliminates the mess and hassle of glue, clamps, or barbed fittings entirely. It works exclusively with the Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock push-to-connect fitting system, which uses stainless steel teeth and EPDM seals to create a leak-proof connection in seconds — no tools required.

Made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), Blu-Lock pipe is flexible enough to route around obstacles, absorb impacts from foot traffic and lawn mowers, and allow precise positioning of sprinkler heads at the correct grade — even as the landscape changes and matures over time. It is a direct, eco-friendly alternative to rigid PVC risers and cut-off risers, with a 100 PSI working pressure rating and dimensions of 0.43" ID × 0.59" OD. This pipe is designed for non-constant pressure (valve-out) cold water outdoor irrigation only. For constant pressure (valve-in) applications, PVC-Lock pipe is recommended instead.

If you're transitioning from traditional black "funny pipe" or standard flex risers to the Blu-Lock system, you'll need a Blu-Lock × swing pipe barb adapter to bridge between the two systems. DripWorks carries the full range of Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock fittings — elbows, tees, couplers, and MPT adapters — to complete any installation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Blu-Lock pipe and how does it differ from regular funny pipe?
Blu-Lock pipe is a flexible LDPE swing pipe that connects sprinkler heads to lateral lines using a push-to-connect, tool-free fitting system. Unlike traditional black "funny pipe," which uses barbed insert fittings (reducing flow by inserting into the pipe's interior), Blu-Lock fittings grip the pipe from the outside using stainless steel teeth — an OD (outside diameter) technology approach. This results in roughly 25% better flow versus traditional insert fittings. If you have existing funny pipe or standard flex risers, you'll need a Blu-Lock × swing pipe barb adapter to transition between the two systems.

Is Blu-Lock pipe compatible with all irrigation fittings?
No. Blu-Lock pipe is only compatible with Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock fittings. It will not seal correctly with standard barbed, compression, or PVC fittings. DripWorks carries the full line of compatible Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock fittings including elbows, tees, couplers, and male pipe thread (MPT) adapters in 1/2", 3/4", and 1" sizes.

Can I use this pipe in a constant-pressure mainline application?
No. Blu-Lock swing pipe is rated for non-constant pressure (valve-out) applications only — meaning the pipe is downstream of the zone valve and only sees pressure when that zone is actively running. For constant-pressure (valve-in) mainline applications, use PVC-Lock or rigid Schedule 40 PVC pipe instead.

How do I connect Blu-Lock pipe to a sprinkler head?
Use a compatible Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock MPT adapter. For example, the BL-436-005 1/2" Blu-Lock to 1/2" MPT adapter connects the swing pipe directly to the male threads on most standard 1/2" sprinkler heads. For sprinklers with a 3/4" threaded inlet, use the BL-436-101 1/2" Blu-Lock to 3/4" MPT adapter. Simply push the pipe into the fitting until it seats — no tools needed.

How do I remove a Blu-Lock fitting once it's connected?
On 1/2" Blu-Lock swing fittings, a patented quick-release collar allows tool-free removal — just depress the collar and pull the pipe free. This makes repositioning sprinkler heads or making repairs quick and clean, with no pipe damage.

What makes Blu-Lock pipe an environmentally friendly choice?
Blu-Lock pipe is made from polyethylene, a recyclable material, and serves as a more sustainable alternative to PVC, which requires solvents and generates VOC emissions during installation. No primer, glue, or chemical fumes are involved in any Blu-Lock installation.

What is the working pressure rating of this pipe?
The BLP-050-CL-1X is rated for a working pressure of 100 PSI. If your system runs at higher pressures, consider adding a pressure regulator upstream of your zone valve to protect all downstream components.

Can I use Blu-Lock pipe to replace PVC risers in an existing system?
Yes — this is one of the most popular uses for Blu-Lock pipe. It is an ideal direct replacement for 1/2" and 3/4" PVC risers and cut-off risers in existing in-ground sprinkler systems. Orbit recommends keeping a supply of Blu-Lock pipe on hand for gradual replacement of aging PVC risers throughout your system.

✔ Compatibility & Installation Notes

Before you install, verify the following:

  • Blu-Lock Fittings Required: This pipe only works with Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock fittings. Standard barbed, compression, or PVC fittings will not create a reliable seal.
  • Transitioning from Funny Pipe: If your system currently uses black "funny pipe" or standard flex risers, purchase a Blu-Lock × swing pipe barb adapter for each connection point. Browse the full Funny Pipe, Adapters & Swing Joints category for options.
  • Valve-Out Only: Do not install this pipe in constant-pressure (valve-in) mainline runs. It is designed for use downstream of zone valves only.
  • Outdoor Cold Water Use Only: Blu-Lock pipe is not rated for indoor plumbing, hot water, or any application other than cold water outdoor irrigation.
  • Pressure: Maximum working pressure is 100 PSI. If your supply pressure exceeds this, install a pressure regulator to protect your swing pipe and sprinkler heads.

Complete Your Sprinkler Installation

Pair this Blu-Lock swing pipe with these essential components for a clean, professional installation:

  • Hydro-Rain Blu-Lock Fittings: Push-to-connect elbows, tees, couplers, and MPT adapters in 1/2", 3/4", and 1" sizes — the only fittings compatible with Blu-Lock pipe.
  • Funny Pipe, Adapters & Swing Joints: Transition fittings and adapters for connecting Blu-Lock pipe to existing funny pipe systems or threaded sprinkler inlets.
  • Rotor Sprinklers: Hunter PGP, PGJ, and I-20 rotors that connect via threaded fittings directly to Blu-Lock swing pipe assemblies.
  • Spray Bodies & Pop-Up Heads: Fixed spray heads for small- to medium-radius coverage, connected to laterals via Blu-Lock swing pipe for flexible, grade-adjustable positioning.
  • Pressure Regulators: Protect swing pipe and sprinkler heads from pressure spikes and over-pressure conditions.
  • Sprinkler Tools: Rotor pullers, arc adjustment tools, and other specialty tools for fast, professional sprinkler installation and maintenance.
