PVC vs Blu Lock Fittings

Jul 6th 2023

While picking out your sprinkler irrigation system, you may notice that there are numerous options for you to choose from. Most might get the job done, but there are clear winners when it comes down to ease of use and friendliness to the environment. Fittings are one example where choosing the right ones can save you time, effort and from using glue or other solvents in your system. Here, we'll be delving into the differences between PVC fittings and Blu Lock fittings so you can determine which one is the best option for you.

PVC Fittings

PVC fittings and pipes are ubiquitous in irrigation systems. Corrosive-free and quite durable, PVC holds up well in the garden and can last for many years. However, it does not stay in place on its own. All pipe thread connections require thread sealant tape to make the connection watertight and prevent leaks. Slip fittings require PVC glue in order to keep the pieces together and prevent any water leaks. This can, unfortunately, introduce small amounts of the chemicals contained in the glue into the system, which some people may want to avoid. It is important to note that there are a few ways of joining PVC pipe without glue.

DripWorks carries many different varieties of fittings, including male inserts, adapters, couplers, elbows, and tees. If you are using PVC fittings to install sprinklers, a fitting type you may want to consider is the swing joint. Instead of connecting the sprinkler right to the main line, swing joints allow you to place the sprinkler exactly where you want it without the danger of the supply line cracking if anything happens to the sprinkler.

Blu Lock Fittings

Blu-lock fittings, on the other hand, utilize push-fit technology and avoid the use of thread tape or glue. It can still be used in the same system as PVC pipe but is not rated for constant pressure. This means that the blu-lock fittings require on/off valves at the beginning of the irrigation system. If you would like to avoid PVC pipe all together, there is also blu-lock piping available for a mess free installation of your irrigation system. It is also important to note that many of these fittings are not UV rated and will last the longest if they are buried underground with the irrigation system.

At DripWorks, we carry the Hydro Rain brand of blu-lock fittings. Made from recyclable HDPE plastic, they are designed to ensure minimal friction within the system and provide leak-proof connections. There is a large variety available for all your irrigation needs, including pipe thread adapters, tees, elbows, and couplers,
