Drip Irrigation: How to Repair Irrigation Hoses
May 6th 2026
The Wilkins Adjustable Whole House Regulator is a heavy-duty, commercial-grade brass component designed to safeguard your entire property's plumbing infrastructure. Installed directly on the main water line before it enters the house, this robust regulator takes harsh, fluctuating municipal or pump water pressure and steps it down to a safe, reliable level. By controlling the incoming pressure for your entire property, you protect indoor appliances, pipes, and your expansive outdoor irrigation valve manifolds from catastrophic pressure spikes and water hammer.
Unlike preset landscape regulators, this premium brass unit features a top-mounted adjustment bolt, allowing you to finely tune the outlet pressure anywhere from 15 to 150 PSI to match the exact needs of your property. Equipped with standard Male Pipe Threads (MPT) on both the inlet and outlet, it integrates securely into rigid PVC or copper mainlines. Additionally, the 1" model (PRHOUSE1) is manufactured utilizing lead-free brass, strictly complying with California's safe drinking water requirements for residential installations.

Install and adjust your brass whole-house regulator.
Step 1: Shut Off Main Water
Before beginning, you must locate your property's main water shut-off valve (usually at the street meter) and completely turn off the water supply. Note: Professional installation by a licensed plumber is highly recommended for main water line plumbing.
Step 2: Prep the Threads
Apply 3 to 4 wraps of Teflon tape to the male pipe threads on both the inlet and outlet of the brass regulator to ensure a secure, watertight seal when threading it into your plumbing manifold.
Step 3: Plumb the Regulator
Thread the regulator securely into your main line. Crucial: Look closely at the brass body and ensure the directional flow arrow points downstream toward the house.
Step 4: Adjust the Pressure
Attach a pressure gauge downstream of the regulator. Turn the water supply back on. Loosen the locknut on top of the regulator, then turn the adjustment bolt clockwise to increase pressure, or counter-clockwise to decrease pressure, until your gauge reads the desired PSI. Retighten the locknut.
Can I leave this regulator under constant pressure?
Yes! Unlike plastic landscape pressure regulators, this heavy-duty brass unit is specifically designed and rated to be installed on main water lines.
It will safely hold back continuous, static municipal water pressure 24 hours a day without bursting or leaking.
How do I adjust the outlet pressure?
To adjust the pressure, locate the bolt and locknut on the top bell housing of the regulator. Loosen the locknut slightly. Using a wrench or screwdriver, turn the adjustment bolt clockwise to raise the downstream pressure, or counter-clockwise to lower the pressure.
You must have a pressure gauge installed downstream to accurately verify the new pressure setting. Once set, tighten the locknut to secure the bolt in place.
What does "Lead-Free" mean for the 1" model?
The 1" PRHOUSE1 model is manufactured using a specialized lead-free brass alloy. This complies with strict California laws and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act requirements for plumbing components that supply water for human consumption.
This makes it safe to install on the main line feeding your home's interior drinking faucets.
Do I need to install a filter before this regulator?
While it is a heavy-duty brass unit, the internal cartridge uses sensitive springs and rubber components to regulate the water. It is highly recommended to install a whole-house Y-strainer or irrigation filter upstream of the regulator if you are drawing from a dirty water source (like a well) to prevent sediment from damaging the internal seals.
