Description

Secure Your Takeoffs. Leak-Proof PVC Connections.

The .400" Barb Grommet (Top Hat Grommet) is the industry-standard solution for transitioning from rigid PVC pipe to flexible drip tape or polyethylene tubing. Acting as a watertight seal, this grommet fits snugly into a drilled hole in your PVC header, creating a receptive port for any .400 barb takeoff adapter. For a precise, leak-free installation, we strongly recommend using our specialized Grommet Drill to create the perfect 9/16" hole.

Commonly used in commercial agriculture and greenhouse setups, these irrigation fittings eliminate the need for expensive PVC tees or glue-in saddles. The "Top Hat" shape ensures the grommet cannot be pushed all the way through into the pipe, while the tapered internal walls compress around the inserted barb to withstand pressure surges and prevent blowouts.

Why Use a Top Hat Grommet?
  • Cost-Effective Manifolds: Allows you to turn standard 1" or larger PVC pipe into a multi-outlet supply header without buying dozens of PVC tees.
  • Leak-Proof Seal: The high-grade thermoplastic rubber conforms to the curvature of the pipe and the barbs of the fitting, creating a dynamic seal that improves under pressure.
  • Safety Flange: The wide "brim" of the Top Hat design prevents the grommet from falling inside the pipe during installation, a common issue with standard rubber grommets.
  • Versatile Compatibility: Accepts all standard .400 barbs, including Tape Loc takeoffs, Easy Loc valves, and transfer barbs.

How to Install: A Step-by-Step Guide

Install takeoffs into PVC in three easy steps.

Step 1: Drill the Header
Using a 9/16" Drill Bit, create a clean hole in your 1" or larger PVC pipe. Ensure you remove any plastic burrs from the edges of the hole.

Step 2: Insert the Grommet
Push the grommet into the drilled hole until the wide "brim" (the Top Hat) sits flush against the outside of the pipe. You may use a little water as lubrication if needed.

Step 3: Insert the Barb
Take your .400 barb fitting (sold separately) and push it firmly through the grommet. The barb will expand the rubber inside the pipe, locking it in place and creating a watertight seal.

✔ Compatibility Check

Verify your sizes before drilling:

  • Required Hole: 9/16" Diameter. (Do NOT use a standard 1/2" bit).
  • Fits Pipe: 1" PVC or larger. Can also be used in large diameter Poly tubing if the wall thickness supports it.
  • Accepts Fittings: Fittings with a .400" Barb inlet (e.g., Tape Loc Takeoffs, Easy Loc Valves).
  • Does NOT Fit: Standard 1/4" micro barbs or 1/2" MPT threads.
