Weed Barrier FAQs

How to Use Weed Barrier?

Weed paper or fabric is laid down on the areas surrounding your plants, trees and shrubs to prevent weed growth. After removing all existing weeds from the area, clear and level the soil before laying out your weed barrier. Rows should be overlapped by six inches to prevent weeds from slipping through the cracks.

Can I Put Weed Barrier Over Mulch?

As long as there aren't weeds or bugs already in the mulch, you can lay a weed barrier over it. However, if the mulch is rocky or has other sharp objects, it could poke holes. You also should not lay mulch on top of weed barrier, as this defeats the purpose - you end up with a nutrient-rich place for weeds to grow above the barrier without those nutrients reaching the plant roots.

Does Weed Barrier Let Water Through?

Weed barriers are designed to let water, air and soil nutrients seep through. However, it typically will not let as much water through as if the soil was left uncovered. A drip irrigation system is useful for weed barriers since water flow can be adjusted to match the permeability of the covering.
